Also known as a sift or a mesh strainer, sieves are essential in the kitchen to help “sift” liquids from solid foods, or to combine and “mesh” together dry ingredients like flour or baking powder. Similar to the colander but much more versatile, sieves tend to have finer holes that allow liquids to pass through while maintaining the desired, and smaller, particles. Most sieves are made with fine plastic or wire, and come in handy when baking or making broths and soups, or when trying to separate seeds and other small items from fruits and vegetables.
Sieves are versatile tools and despite the fine mesh characteristics have proven quite durable over time, and thus dish washer safe. Whether you’re making fresh juice or simply trying to drain a pot of pasta, a sieve is essential for helping to make the process that much easier.
